Behavioral Science TV Character Evaluation
Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s chief contributions to the field of psychology are his investigations into the nature of the ââ¬Å"unconsciousâ⬠and the psychosexual development stages of human beings especially the infants. It was Freud who proposed that a crucial part of human development depends on the personââ¬â¢s ability to overcome or control his respective pleasures during the stage of infancy or childhood. The inability to control these pleasures, Freud claims, will certainly take their toll on the individual during the latter stages in life. On the other hand, Carl Rogers proposed that understanding human personalities and relationships require an approach that focuses on the individual rather than on the external environment that are presumed to influence peopleââ¬â¢s behaviors. He formulated a person-centered theory that is founded on at least nineteen propositions, all of which are tied to the general notion of treating the individual as the foundation of any inquiry int o human personalities and relationships. His concept of a person who is able to function fully departs from other ideas in the sense that he does not discount the idea that even those things which we perceive as destructive can also contribute to the growth of the person. Finally, Carl Gustav Jung championed the idea that spirituality is an integral part of human development, even taking an important role in his concepts of therapy in curing an individual from both physical and emotional difficulties. He also focused on the concepts of the ââ¬Å"archetypeâ⬠as well as the anima and the animus, quite apart from his elaborate discussions on the concept of the ââ¬Å"collective unconsciousâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"complexâ⬠. Moreover, he also espoused the concept of ââ¬Å"individuationâ⬠as a way for an individual to realize his fullest potentials.

Key Values of US Culture in any Disney Movie
IntroductionMovies speak volumes about a particular subject. It is even understood that most animated motion pictures even hammer the point much clearer than their non-animated counterparts. It has been a tradition that with every animated movie, a corresponding moral accompanies it to the end of the credits. The ability of animated films to send out messages within the confines of its story has been one of the hallmarks of animated American movies. With The Lion King, the movie stresses the importance of family through the relationship of both Simba and Mufasa. It also clearly does the same with the movie Finding Nemo as the whole story is about a dad clown fish tries to find his lost son, Nemo. There are a lot of subtle undertones and values which are also placed in some animated moviesââ¬âsome even more poignant than the next. This paper aims to shed some light on that fact. Walt Disneyââ¬â¢s Aladdin, through the genie of the lamp, depicts equal opportunity and material comf ort, which even solidifies the classic American dream. The American DreamThe great ââ¬Å"American dreamâ⬠is defined by James Adams as ââ¬Å"the dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievementâ⬠(Adams, 2001) It has been one of the most treasured features of the United States as the wealthiest nation on the face of this earth. It is in this particular country that ââ¬Å"dreams are madeâ⬠and where oneââ¬â¢s past is quickly covered in prosperity upon reaching this particular land. As grandiose as this claim is, the different testimonies of all sorts of people have given justice to it on more than one occasion. If one looks closely at the Walt Disney animated film, Aladdin, certain aspects of this dream are also embedded in it.The GenieThe genie of the lamp in the animated film Aladdin can symbolize so many different things but more than anything, it is able to sig nify the American values of equal opportunity and material comfort. Gleaning from the genieââ¬â¢s character, it is not as hard to associate material comfort with him. The genie of the lamp is required to fulfill absolutely any three wishes that his owner desires. With the exception of making people fall in love, killing someone or wishing for more wishes, the master of the genie is quite literally powerful beyond measure. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when Aladdin, who is now already Prince Ali, parades across the streets of Agrabah. During the latter part of the song, the lyrics of the song gives testament to how much has changed with Aladdinââ¬â¢s situation:ââ¬Å"Prince Ali!à Amorous he! Ali Ababwaà Heard your princess was a sight lovely to seeà And that, good people, is whyà he got dolled up and dropped byà With sixty elephants, llamas galoreà With his bears and lionsà A brass band and moreà With his forty fakirs, his cooks, his bakersà His birds that warble on keyà Make way for prince Ali!â⬠(Clements, 1992)The former ââ¬Å"street ratâ⬠has now become a prince because of the genie. This alludes to the fact that the genie is a very good provider of material comfort, should one choose to get that from him. In the same sense, the land of America is also able to provide material comfort from those who ask and willingly strive to make it happen. The last American value, which is equal opportunity, is much more subtly expressed in the character of the genie. Since the rules of the lamp is that whenever a person gains ownership of the lamp, the genie of the lamp is now bound to serve that person and that person only. All of the wishes of the owner of the lamp are satisfied by the genie. The ââ¬Å"equal opportunityâ⬠clause enters here by giving absolutely anyone a fair shot to being ââ¬Å"rich and powerfulâ⬠The only negative thing about relating this particular equal opportunity clause with the genie is that no one is able to share that equal prosperity in such a way that the genie sort of has an exclusivity clause that does not allow him to grant two separate wishes of two different masters at the same time. (Clements, 1992) One person must be able to wield the lamp in order for the genie to grant their wish.ConclusionLooking deeper at the animated feature film Aladdin, one sees a much more poignant picture of how America essentially is as a superpower and a proverbial land flowing with milk and honey. As the film and as this paper suggests, America is a land where one can prosper materially in terms of wealth and it is also a land where equal opportunity is stressed. As long as someone works hard enough, they will simply have both within their lifetimes. Maybe, just maybe, you really donââ¬â¢t need a magic lamp with a genie after all.ReferencesClements, Ron. Law in the Modern Times
Dietrich v The Queen Argued that there Is Immunity from conviction unless such a person In provided with counsel at the public expense. Mason C. J. And Brenan J. ââ¬Å"The applicant is entitled to succeed because his trial miscarried by virtue of the judge's failure to stay or adjourn the trial until arrangements were made for counsel to appear the public expenseÃ'âº. He was deprived of his right to a fair trial. â⬠ââ¬Å"Indeed, where there is no legal representation, and save in the exceptional case of the skilled litigant, the adversary system, whether or not It remains in theory, in racist breaks down â⬠ââ¬â Lord Devil. There Is an argued analogy with the united States Constitution, however as It Is based on their Constitution It has no parallel In Australian law. Could create difficulties ââ¬â egg. Accused could demand counsel of a particular degree, skill or experience. Lack of representation may mean that an accused is unable to receive, or not receive a f ar trial. Brenna J. Whilst dissenting, Brenna acknowledges: ââ¬Å"The entitlement of a person charged with a serious offence to be represented by counsel at public expense would be an important safeguard of fairness in the administration of criminal justice.Argues that our common law is different to other common law countries that have a Bill of Rights. ââ¬Å"In the present case, there is no constitutional or statutory provision which supports the applicant's case. â⬠ââ¬Å"Every right or title must be enforced or administered in some form. â⬠Deane J. ââ¬Å"The entitlement of an accused person to a fair trial according to law Is recognized as the central thesis of the administration of criminal justice. â⬠and right' which subjects innocent men t increased dangers of conviction merely cause of their poverty. However, viewed in the context of the overall trial, impropriety or unfairness could not have infected the verdict in the sense that it could not have advers ely influenced the final verdict which the accused was convicted. â⬠Dawson J. The Trial Judge addressing Jury ââ¬Å"The fact is he unrepresented, and you should make whatever allowances you believe appropriate for that fact. â⬠ââ¬Å"Entitlement to appear by counsel is not the same thing as entitlement to have counsel at the public expense. â⬠ââ¬Å"If he is convicted, an appeal cannot succeed merely because he was at a equidistant in being unrepresented. ââ¬Å"There cannot be a miscarriage of Justice merely because an accused in unrepresented when he has no entitlement to representation. â⬠Dietrich relied on Article 14(3)(d) of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: ââ¬Å"To have legal assistance assigned to him, and without payment by him in any such case if he does not have sufficient means to pay for it. â⬠However Dawson J. Believes that the common law can hold a fair trial with an unrepresented accused. Robinson v The Queen Man ac cused and convicted of murder in JamaicaMinority Judges dissented ââ¬â found that accused had no defense counsel and a denial of such a right was sufficient to impair the trial. The UN Human Rights Committee responded to the trial of Robinson by stating that ââ¬Å"the absence of counsel constituted an unfair trial. â⬠In the common law country of Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms holds that in serious offences, counsel is essential for a fair trial. Deane J. ââ¬Å"Central of our criminal lawâ⬠¦ That no person shall be convicted of crime otherwise than after a fair trial according to law. â⬠Gaudier J.A trial is not necessarily unfair because it is less than perfect, but it is unfair if it involves a risk of the accused being improperly convicted. â⬠ââ¬Å"What makes a trial without representation unfair is the possibility that representation might affect the outcome of the case. â⬠Miscarriage of Justice. Mason C. J. ââ¬Å"By reason of the la ck of representation of the accused, the resulting trial is not a fair one, any conviction of the accused must be quashed by an appellate court for the reason that there has been a miscarriage of Justice in that the accused as not been convicted without a fair trial.Where an accused has no representation, proceedings should be adjourned to enable accused to find counsel. Paragraph issue? If the trial proceeds without a defense counsel, and the accused is convicted, the conviction will almost certainly be quashed. The notion that a trial Judge may be able to give helping hand to accused is illusory and bound to cause problems in course of trial. No Judges prepared to fashion a constitutional right to state-funded counsel. Murphy J. Is McGinnis: ââ¬Å"Putting aside an accused to trial in a serious case is barbarous.

Compare and Contrast The Theology Of Judaism And Christianity
By à theology à we à mean à a à rational à and à systematic à study à of à a à religion. It à is à an analysis à to à understand à a à religious à matter. This à analysis à helps à us à to à understand à more à truly à our à religion, and à also à in à the propagation à of à our à religion. As à we à know, Judaism à is à the à religion à of à Jewish à people. Judaism à theology follow à monotheism à i.e. à belief à in one à single à God. Moreover à Judaism à theology à says that à God à knows à every à thing, has à unlimited à power, has created à the à universe à and à is kind à to à everyone. The à essence à of à believes à of à Jewish à people is à the à written and à oral Torah. Torah à is à a à Hebrew à word à meaning à teaching, instruction à or à law. It à is à basically a à set à of à five books à of à Moses à also à known à as à five à laws à of à Moses. Moses à is the Father à and à chief à of à all à prophets. Torah à says à that à all à living à and à non à living à things à in à this à world à are à creation of à God. It à is à the à God, who à has wrought à things, workout à and à shall à workà for à ever. It says à that à creator à is à one à and à is à incorporeal à i.e. à having no à corporeal à qualities à or à in other à words à He à has à no à material à or à physical à form à of à substance. It à says à that creator was à the à first à and à will à be à the à last, and à is à the à only one à to à be à worshipped à and à none else. Torah à also says à that à all à words à of à prophets à are à true. It à says à that à all à our à deeds and our à thoughts à are à known à by à God. As à there à is à a à saying à in à Judaism, ââ¬Å"He à who à had à formed à their à hearts altogether, He à knows à all à their à deedsâ⬠. According à to à Torah God à rewards à those à who à keep à His à commandments à and à punishes those à who à go beyond à the à limits à of à what à is à morally à acceptable. One à of à the à most à ardent à faiths à of Jewish à people à is à that à there à will à be à a à resurrection à or à rebirth à of à God, but à on à the time à decided à by à Him. It à is à believed à that à every à man à and à woman à on à earth à is à like God, with à a à spiritual à and à always à existing soul. Everyone à is à made à to à be à the I mage and à likeness à of à God. For à most à Jewish à people, earth à is the à place à where à they à are à supposed à to à enjoy à their à life, not à in à the à heaven. According à to à them, hard à work à and à education à are the à paths à directed à by à God à to à live à a à good à life. They à do à not à find à accumulation à of wealth à to à be à an à evil à act à as à long à as à it is à used à in à good à deeds à and à charity. One à can live à a à comfortable à and à cozy à life à following à moralà rules. They à also à promote à honest sex à and à marital à life, but à oppose à adultery, premarital à sex, homosexuality, abortion à and à these as à sins. They à say à that à pleasures à life à like à drinking à and à dancing à are à good à if à not à à doneà in à excess. One à should à not à be à habitat à of à such à things. Judaism à theology à says à that à after à death à a à person à is à sent à to à heaven à or à hell. Heaven à is à considered à to à be à dwelling à of à God à and à angels. And à hell à as à home à of devils à and à place à where à wicked à people à are à punished. Now, à if à we à à talk à about à Christian à theology, then à there à is à a à very à clear à doctrine or à set à of à believes à related à to à the à Holy à Trinity. It à says à that à there à is à only à one à God, with à three à persons, the à Father, the à Son à and à the à Holy à Spirit. Each à person à is à fully God, but à there à are à not à three à Gods à but à only à one à God. Christians à consider à God à himself à à as à a à community à of à love. The à father à loves à Son, and à the à Son à loves à the Father à and à this love à of à the à Father à to à the à Son à and à of à the à Son à to à the à Father à is à the Holy à Spirit. Three à persons à but à only à one à true à God. This à is à the à most à glorious à mystery à of à the à Holy à Trinity à in à the à whole à Bible. It à is à said à that à God à is à repeatedly the à God à of à Abraham, the à God à of à Issac à and à the à God à of à Jacob, symbolizing à the à Holy à Trinity. Abraham à is à God à the à father, Issac à is à God à the à Son à and à Jacob à is à God the à Holy à Spirit. In à Christianity à faith à is à the à basis à of à a à Christianââ¬â¢s à life, the à foundation à of à the Christian building. One à of à the à faiths à is à that à the à person, who à believes à in à the à Son, has à eternal à life, whoever à disobeys à Him à will à not à see à life, but à Godââ¬â¢s à wrath à resets upon à him. Christians à take à baptism à a à way à by à which à the à original à sin is à forgiven. Baptism à is à a sacrament à instituted à and ordered à by à Jesus à Christ. By baptism à we emerge à as à a new à creature, a child à of God à and à receive the à gift à of Holy à Spirit. It à is believed à that à after à baptism à our à old à man à dies à and à is à buried à à with Christ. Moreover It à à is à à hat à beforeà à baptism you à areà a à child à of à the à devil à and à after à baptism à you à are child à of à God. A à man who à believes à in à Jesus, but à do à not à receive à baptism à in à his church à is à not à a à Christian. For à a à Christian à it à is à not à only à important à to à believe à in à God à but à also à to receive à what à God à gives à us. It means à to à give à thanks à to à God à for à everything. This à is the à secret à of à how à to à keepà ourselves à always à happy and à satisfied à in ourà life. To à give à thanks à to à God à for à every thing à is à the à first à step à to à calmà ourselves à and face à any storm à inà our à life. Media: Celebrities
Coming from a Latin word celeber, the word celebrity means a person widely recognised by the public and the media, person who through his command in the public creates media attention and is widely covered. One of prerequisite of a person being celebrity is fame, but that has to be associated with the media attention. Mass communication play a vital role in making someone celebrity as the person can be famous and well known but if the media is not piqued by that person, then the person cannot reach the celebrity level.People become celebrities in accordance to their professions, what they do to the public; this can be politicians or Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of certain large organisations such as Bill Gates, who stepped out of it few months ago, but still a celebrity. Celebrities to be in that status with the help of media are being known across the world, meaning can be famous not only in their countries but even outside their countries, and this category caters especially to th e politicians and actors and actresses.Religious leaders example Bishop Desmond Tutu for his involvement in freedom fight in South Africa and cultural leaders such as Dalai Lama of China for his outstanding performance in fighting for the rights of Tibet people; these people can be famous not only in their countries but not abroad due to their extensive coverage in the media. Excellence in sports also can make people famous not only in their countries but even worldwide such as Serena and Venus Williams are known globally due to their excellent performance in Tennis sport.Apart from sports, some people become celebrated due to their nature of their professions especially the highly paid ones which make them in contact with the media in most of their work schedules. These include people in the media presenters who are highly paid and well respected due to their exceptional work to the public, interior decorators, movie producers and sports coaches to mention a few who have caught the media attention and have been covered in mass entertainment. Some people become celebrities due to their family backgrounds, especially if some member of family were and are celebrities. This is found mostly in families engaged in music and movies industries like Jacksons, Winans and Osbournes while for politician families we can say Bushes, Clinton and Kennedys in United States of America (USA).Nevertheless, in accordance with the definition of celebrity that is something that has to be commanded by a person both in public and through the media, most of people must asking themselves how these people have earned the celebrity title. Due to this some scholars did start studying this celebrity phenomenon, by looking at the celebrity characteristics, psychology and even the interaction with the members of public, which makes people sometimes get too carried away with the celebrity worship. In America the number of people worshipping celebrities keeps on going up which has even affected people psychologically. Famously the syndrome now is known as celebrity-worship syndrome (CWS), the term invented by media but psychologists call it Celebrity Worship Scale (WCS).This situation has made people to look closely to the whole issue of celebrity, its attachment with the society and how people are reacting to it. Why people acting they way they do to the point of stalking celebrities. In survey conducted in USA, more people are affected by CWS which has led to people seek psychological help as Kate Douglas portrayed in her article when you wish upon a star, ââ¬Å"Psychologists are starting to suspect that worshipping celebrities is the top of a slippery slope that leads to depression, anxiety and psychosis.â⬠(Douglas Kate, When you wish upon a star, 2003).The effect is not only to the celebrities themselves, but the public also get affected by the whole issue of celebrity. Most of people wishing to be stars so as to be treated like star especially due to the media coverage these people get. Studying celebrity academically can help the society understand both parts that means celebrities themselves and the public which is affected by the concept of celebrity. The effect is much grave especially to the adolescents who spend most of their time wishing to be star, having cuttings and pictures of stars in their rooms and things they possess. Yes teenagers can think about celebrities as it is bring sense of social attachment, but not that excessively which affect the way of thinking of these teenagers or even adult for that matter which sometimes experience difficulties when encountered with problems. The effect if not dealt with early leads to more effects such as disorder to the worshipers like stalking celebrities or disillusion stalker gets that celebrity is love with him/her. The situation apart from stalking stars and celebrities, some of fans are copying what these celebrities are doing even if are bad things. This condition has sparked a lot of academics into researching the issue of celebrity and looking deeply for its effects to the society. An example that can be used here is the case of John Warnock Hinckley, Jr. who stalked Judie Foster after watching the Taxi Driver movie. He was seeking Judieââ¬â¢s attention to the point of following her to another state, the situation led into Hinckley attempting to assassinate President Ronald Regan in 1981 so as to catch Judieââ¬â¢s attention. He was later charged but found not guilty on basis of insanity and admitted at Saint Elizabeth in Washington DC. With experience like this studying celebrity should be taken into account as to understand psychological effects that associate with celebrities. The effect does not end to the fans only, but celebrities too are affected by the whole idea of being celebrity. Celebrities sometimes are also affected with the way society take them, their image and sometimes they are supposed to do things which is not in their heart simply be cause they have to comply with public especially in maintaining good image. The good image does not necessarily be the star image but sometimes can be the image of the organisations they are representing. This notion tend to make celebrities pretend sometimes especially in front of members of media and photographers. In his book The Image (1961), historian Daniel Boorstin criticised the way American society was living where it was heading concerning public image. The image that keeps on being fabricated and staged by the influential people especially politicians, movie stars and other celebrities. ââ¬Å"Just as there were now counterfeit events, so, he said, there were also counterfeit people ââ¬â celebrities ââ¬â whose identities were being staged and scripted, to create illusions that often had no relationship to any underlying reality.â⬠(Boorstin Daniel, The Image, 1961). The tendency, which has forced some of celebrities to get depressed and frustrated, hence seeki ng medical help which has led to some psychologists researching into the matter. The good example here can be referred to an icon which has made history in Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe who died by overdose from drugs. Marilyn was under chronic depression which made be constant contact with psychologists but later she paid with her life. Though not most of celebrities in movie industry die by overdosing themselves, but most of them undergo depression, which later on lead into drug addictions. Not only movie superstars experience the other side of the coin, which is depression even politicians and other celebrities do. The good example being Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the President of America in 1800s has also underwent severe depression too which was claimed to be associated with a horse blow he got when he was 10 years of age, while it sometimes associated with the death of his first love and mother. The only therapy in those days was through churches in Christian moral treatment but L incoln managed to overcome his depression by engaging himself in politics which later on he become a well respected one.Despite the fact that movie icons get into addictions, not all celebrities are like that as there is difference between these two categories. Film star is the one that get his/her stardom due to the participation in movie industry but celebrities can be from any field apart from film industry. Taking examples of film stars the list is long from Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Judie Foster, Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage to mention a few.In conclusion, it is worthy studying celebrity issues, as it is the only way of understanding the interactions between celebrities and their surroundings, the people they mingle with, how they maintain their personalities and images to the public. Many celebrities are being used to advertise products such as David Beckham, Roberto Carlos and others like Christina Aguilera in Pepsi advert. This advertising involves media and through that people tend to question the authenticity of the products displayed, hence lead to more research on them.Apart from advertisements, studies can be done to the people around celebrities, how are they interacting with them and what effects do they get, but all in all it is worthy a study.Reference:Boorstin Daniel, The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, 1961Douglas Kate, When you wish upon a star, Newscientist, issue 2408, August 2003www.mindhacks.com/blog/2006/08/star_struck.html

Assignment One Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Assignment One - Essay Example The lives of Giovanni and Lusanna further portray the differing social statuses of women as well as the role they play in the revitalization. On the other hand, the lives of Martin and Bertrande show the arising events throughout the lives of this couple. However, all these events come back to a common ground, which is love. Love then grows and ends with marriage, and at this point, its relationship with law starts to develop2. These two stories about lives of two different couples are similar in a number of ways. To begin with, both stories reveal a lot of love between the couples, which in turn leads to marriage. According to the story about Giovanni and Lusanna, for instance, the theme of love proves to prevail on their day of marriage. The author states that their lives together proved that marriages actually happened out of love, not arrangements by parents. This means that two people had to come together and have a relationship before getting married to each other. Consequently , it served to enhance how much they knew each other and gave time for the two families to familiarize with each other. Similarly, the lives of Martin and Bertrande develop the aspect of marriage. Their story begins with the two getting married. Although their first appearance in the story is when they are teenagers, the author straight away drives us to the wedding ceremony. The usual procession then takes place after paying the brideââ¬â¢s dowry, and the wedding ceremony is over. However, with them it occurs in a much-unexpected manner. This renders marriage as a tremendously significant aspect in the story since it introduces it. In addition, the couples in each story go through a marriage ceremony perhaps with the intent of sealing their relationship and making it public. Furthermore, both stories incorporated the facet of law in them. In the life of Giovanni and Lusanna, her representation by her brother in the archbishopââ¬â¢s court incorporates the aspect of law. As men tioned in the Florence law, women could not represent themselves, but instead their legal guardians presented their cases. The author also explains the use of law to fight for the rights of women. Nevertheless, in the life story of Martin and Bertrande, law was a pivotal aspect in resolving disputes. The characteristic of law developed when Martin came back to their home and out of nowhere claimed himself as the rightful heir to the familyââ¬â¢s wealth. Martin demanded that he get his portion of the inheritance despite his disappearance. He made it worse by threatening his uncle, who now headed the family, that if he did not give him his inheritance, he would take the disagreement to court. This tells the reader that people in the story recognized the presence of the courts, and they were subject to its ruling. Conversely, both stories had disagreeing aspects, for instance, the social interactions. In the lives of Giovanni and Lusanna, there is a clear background of social intera ctions, as opposed to the story about Martin and Bertrande. Additionally, in Giovanniââ¬â¢s and Lusannaââ¬â¢s lives, the entire process diffuses into the story in a progressive manner, perhaps in the effort to explain their background. Although support of premarital relationships was minimal in their times, people still engaged themselves in premarital intercourse. This explains the realities of
